19 Sept: From Veg Van to Veg Box

After a happy year and a half, the Veg Van is evolving: from Veg Van to Veg Box.
It’s been an exciting year: from winning retail awards, to providing over 4,000 people with fresh local fruit and veg, to discovering £1 spent on Veg Van produce generates 84% more for the local economy, to enabling local primary school pupils and a disability college to learn new skills. However, generating enough sales in a suburban environment was always going to be challenging and we need to make sure we can continue to provide local veg in Sutton in the long term.

In partnership with Sutton Community Farm we are therefore launching a truly local veg box: a weekly bag of fresh, delicious vegetables, direct from the farm delivered, by the Veg Van, to your door. The Veg Box will replace the Veg Van market – our last market will be next Thursday 29th September.

Do come and get involved at the farm, we have volunteer days every Tues, Weds and Saturday and lots of free events for all the family.

Hi everyone! We all enjoying this lovely sunny weather? Definitely beats the snow we had. This week sees the return of our popular ‘Get your 5 a day the Veg Van way’ offer. Buy 5 different items of fruit and veg, and you will get the cheapest free! We are good to you. Our spring greens are still coming straight from the farm…can’t get much fresher. A bag is £1 so they are sure to go fast so come down and get yours…..

We’re having another sweet and juicy apple filled week on the Van with a special promotion.

When you spend £5 you can get 3 apples free!

There are Cox, Gala and Jonagold to choose from so be sure to visit the van this week. We also have Bramley cooking apples, and Conference and Williams pears.

This week we’re getting fresh and fruity with a local apple festival:

the Van will be selling cox (the old classic, first grown in England in 1825), gala (mild and sweet), jonagold (large and sweet, a cross between Golden Delicious and Jonathan) and jazz (sweet and crunchy, a cross between gala and braeburn only developed in 2004!) as well as conference and juicy Williams pears.

And if you fancy growing your own EcoLocal are running a fruit tree pruning course on Saturday 27th Jan.

Other news: the Veg Van is no longer at the Rose and Crown on Thursdays (although you can still order and pick up a box from there) but will be at Carshalton station from 5.00 – 8pm.
